Stay Clam

I'm about to spend a ton of money on Christmas. Take a deep breath! I'm going to give an explanation and then you can fry me. There are just certain people that I'm not willing to stop buying for. So here it is.....
A friend of mine has three kids, one DJ's age and then one in about 3rd grade and a 5 year old. The kids don't have grandparents on the Father's side. And while they do have grandparent's on the mother's side, they are from a poor country and can't do much. And while it is their Christmas, the parent's believe in educational gifts for the most part. BORING! Let's just say that my gifts are very well received. I'm thinking Wisconsin Dells. They have a lot of great deals in the winter. I'm going to get a $125 gift card from here! And so I don't put a strain on their tight budget, I've been saving our free gas cards for them.
I'm going to put a note in the gift to tell them how to book super cheap rooms and suggest bringing their own food up there so they get to go for free.
This is the gift that I'm looking forward to giving the most and it will be free since I've saved my credit card rewards for this.
I'm off to shop,

Wicked Wednesday!

This would probably work! I'm not going to try it though.
Have a great hump day,
PS-Go here for a second dose of naughty! Gurnee is just down the road from me and I've eaten at that restaurant.

Another Thank You!

I won a giveaway over at My Money Mission. She is sweet and has great giveaways! I'm loving the flosser and the cards are perfect. I'm thinking that I need to order a few more. And I have to say that Tracy from Sincerely Yours is a doll! And what are the odds of her living in the town that I grew up in. It was like fate was involved!

Looking for a Craft Idea

Every year, we have Thanksgiving at our house. We have anywhere from 20-25 people. It is a ton of work but I'm sure you know this.
Anyways, after we eat and clean up the kitchen, the boys play cards and the girls make projects. One year we made tiny gingerbread houses that closely resembled an outhouse. The next year we painted barn yard animals. They sucked! So I'm trying to keep the costs down again and come up with a cheap craft. I was thinking about painting wine glasses or making jewelery. I can get the wine glasses from the dollar store but painting wasn't a real big winner last year. I think the jewelery would be a big hit but it would probably cost a ton and I have no idea how to make anything. Is there anything else that we could make on the cheap?
Thanks for the help,

Let me start this by saying, "I don't want to hear it." And I'm saying it in my most stern mom tone. This is an update to Santa's Secret. Yup, I went way over budget on this one. I'm not telling anymore who is getting what but I doubt my little nephew is going to read this. He isn't two yet and his world consists only of Thomas and ride on cars. My guess is this will be his favorite gift. The only problem is I don't think I will have the self-control to wait. Honestly, I've already said that we should give it to him when he is here at Thanksgiving. I mean they won't have much room at Christmas for such a big toy in the car(they live in KY) so giving it to him now only makes sense, right?
My grand total for the year is $441.23. If I give it to him now, do I get to subtract the $107.10 from the Christmas total?

I usually don't tell a bunch of stories about my kids. Most of us have them(kids) and you have probably heard most of the stories over and over. Bet you haven't heard this one before.............
I had a bunch of errands to run in town a while ago(forgot to tell you this little gem). I had to go to the library, the post office and the bank. I was going to do one loop and come home. It was a little after three and I was out the door like a flash. I get a little ways down the road and there was DJ walking home. He has been walking home with a couple of friends on nice days. And this was an especially nice day. People were playing with their kids in the front yards, doing yard work, and just catching up with their neighbors. Remember that.
DJ broke off from his friend and headed towards me. I pulled over to talk and rolled down the window. He stayed on his side of the road because there was quite a bit of traffic. I called out if he wanted to run errands with me. He said no and then yelled, "NO, I WILL NOT HAVE SEX WITH YOU FOR MONEY!"
I drove away quickly and hoped that no one got my plate number.

Shocking News

I never thought I would see the day but Anna is super clean and a penny pincher. I told her I didn't know who she was. I'm so proud but it probably won't last long.
I've talked to a few parents that have sent their kids away and they assured me that all the kids go through a rough adjustment period. Since we had never been through it before it was a bit shocking. And because the school is in the middle of nowhere, Anna had a hard time adjusting to having nothing to do on top of home sickness. Us city slickers don't know how to behave down south. LOL!

More Christmas Crap!

I got those cute little purse for $5 each. It is hard to see but they are made out of wood and have been painted on. I have never seen anything like them before. Guess what I'm getting in my stocking?
The Marilyn picture was $20. I have spent $334.13 so far. I'm going to blow passed this pretty quick though. Both of the kids said they want money for Christmas. DJ has to pay for his car insurance and Anna has college bills. So checks will probably end up in their stockings if Santa approves.
I think that I'm going to do quite a few gift cards this year. So if you are planning on buy them don't forget to go through My Points.

All Hail Sluggy!

A huge thank you to sluggy! I won the boring box and I must say that it is far from boring. What you can't see is that DJ's hand was just off to the left. I had to yell at him to stop for one second before snagging all the chocolate! You did good, slugs.
Thanks for stopping over,

And my booger for the day is Marilyn from Marilyn's Money. She always has something going on and it is always about getting things for cheap! I love that!

Halloween Ideas!

Thanks to the fun and slightly twisted Donna Freedman, I have a new site to scour for Halloween. The site has all kinds of foods for a Halloween Party.

Believe it or not, that is not kitty litter, it's cake. I'm not quite sure if I'll make that one for the party we are going to this weekend. I'll probably just stick with cookies.

An Update!

I usually don't post jokes that I get off of the Internet but this one ties in so well that you need to read it first and then what is happening here. In the end, it is always perspective.

Here is the joke, most of you have already read it but.......................................
Subject: What pets write in their diary

Excerpts from a Cat's Daily Diary...

Day 983 of my captivity..

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects.

They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets.

Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am.

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of 'allergies.' I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around her feet as she was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.

The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now................

We have not had satellite for 42 days. Den is OK with it most of the time. But on occasion, he points an invisible remote at the TV and tries to press buttons when I'm in the room. DJ whimpers a lot and complains that there is nothing to do in the house. And that is where I remind him that there are always chores to be done and homework.
I, on the other hand, think its great. There is less noise in the house and we are saving $25 a month.
I feel the stirs of a rebellion coming, though. I have been sleeping with the light on and one eye open for some time now.

Trust Me Baby I'm Clean

I have a few things going on here. First off a reminder, back up your shit! I had a trojan and while the girl on girl porn was great for a few moments, it meant that I had to have a dear friend wipe my computer. Hi Steve! Luckily, I had saved everything to disk, online, and flash drive. Thank God! I had it wiped pretty quickly because with my luck it was only a matter of time before the child porn started popping up. Illinois is cracking down on it, which is a good thing but you know my luck.
Secondly, I retract my statement! I have never had to do this before but here we are. I have NO car skills whatsoever. Wiping the car's computer only meant that we went to Gurnee and got into some really fierce traffic and then broke down. It was one of the scariest rides in my life. And wouldn't you know, when we got back in Antioch the damn thing worked perfect. The F***us is now going for scrap!
And last but not least, DJ's Xbox 360 got the rings of death for the third time. They tried to charge him a minimum of $120 to fix it. That's where I got involved and he is getting another refurbished one for free. Hmmmm, I wonder how long this one will work.
So that's my three electronic problems. If I don't get back to you anytime soon, you know why.
I'm off to drink,

Say My Name!

All together now, chant my name, SONYA, SONYA, SONYA!
Guess who fixed the Focus? No, guess? Yup, it was me. And you would think that Den would have been cheering me on. I think that I may have bruised his pride a bit and it really didn't help that I was boasting! He got over it fast but I could still see it in his eyes. And I really didn't care.
And you want to know the funny thing about it, every time we thought we had a way to get rid of the car something came up that made us keep it. It has been really weird around here lately. We were going to take a loss and just donate it. Not long after we decided that, the insurance guy called and said that if we kept the car our insurance would go down. Hmmm, that's odd. So we held on to it every time and just decided that when it snowed we would donate it because we didn't want to shovel around it.
We had a spark plug go out on the Kia. So Den changed it and the check engine light stayed on. He brought it to Auto Zone and they hooked it up to a scanned(pulls the codes from the computer to see what is wrong) then cleared the codes. Sometimes if the codes haven't been cleared and it is fixed, it won't run right. Den talked to the guy a while and decided to buy a scanner. They were on sale for $80(ish) and since he works on our cars and a lot of other peoples, he thought it would be a good idea. He even looked worried that he had spent that much. LOL, I agreed that it was a good purchase because sometimes you can't get the car to Auto Zone so they could run the codes.
So whenever I let the dog out, I see the Focus and on occasion even cuss at it. We spent what, $1300+ on it and it is worse. So I started thinking about how it spits out codes on so many different systems, anything from the engine to the fuel system. And they just keep piling up. Just when he thought that he had one thing fixed more things would come up. I thought about how it sounded like a computer problem and then it dawned on me, it's the computer. So I begged Den to hook it up and clear the codes. And he wasn't a happy camper, he has had it with the car and I don't blame him. He was the one always working on it. So he hooked it up and cleared the codes and it runs like a champ! Grrrrrrr! We may need to get a new Mother board(car computer) if the problem comes back. But at least, now we know what is wrong with it. But since it sat for months the back wheel is making a God awful noise and the muffler had a hole in it. We are going to go with cheap fixes and get it going again. It will save us $20-$25 a week in gas and that money will go right back in the car fund.
Didn't I say it had to be something stupid? So why didn't I figure this out say $1300 ago?

Coffee Drink!

Den actually came up with this one and it was soooo good. I have to have coffee in the morning or else I'm not such a nice person. Who am I kidding, I'm never a nice person. ;)
Anyways, when we went down to EIU for family weekend I forgot to pack/buy an instant mocha coffee drink for the morning. I usually make my own drink every morning but I figured that I would just make a cup in the room or grab one from the free breakfast buffet. And then something wonderful(well, wonderful in my book) Den came back with half a cup of coffee for me, a little carton of milk and a hot cocoa packet. I mixed them all together and it was good. He has his moments!

Full of Helpful Hints

I'm sure that some of you already know this but it was new to me. I knew that when you printed coupons from My Points you got points for using them. But Inbox Dollars pays you $.10 for each coupon you use. This I didn't know. So I have been getting my coupons from them lately.

Same goes for SendEarings, $.10!
Just thought that I would let you know. I'm sure that some won't agree but when I have a printed coupon that is about to expire I give it to a family member or I just leave it with the product at the store. Yes, yes, I know some stores don't like that or somehow someone is going to take the coupon and hack all of my personal information and I'll be homeless. But I still do it.

Friend's Friday

And my Friday Friend and beloved booger for the day is babe from Frugal Babe! I love seeing what she is up to and I love the fact that she is turning into a minimalist. I would love that! But I don't think that I could get the rest of the people here on board!

I love Halloween! It is way better than Christmas. This is a plate of cookies that I made last year to bring to a party. I made crinkles and I used the Pecan Sandy recipe(minus the nuts) to make fingers and round cookies I could draw eyes on. To make a finger just roll the ball into a finger shape making sure to make indentation so it looks like there is a knuckle and then press the almond in. After you bake them, you may need to let them cool on the cookie sheet, they are delicate until room temperature. The Walmart by us sells food color pens. I used them to color the cookies.

Only Here

It's our 16th Anniversary today and what did I find outside? A dead raccoon on the stoop. Hmmmm, its a sign I tell you. I thought it was the Silver Holloware year.
We found a gift card in the drawer and we are going to T.G.I.Fridays for dinner. Den said we could just save money and eat the raccoon. I'm good.

I Almost Forgot!

This is an Emergency Service Message! Now is the time to cash in all of your points for Christmas. I just got 2, yes 2, free gift cards($25 each) from My Points and a $500 check for cashing in the points from our credit card. So I have two more gifts and my total is still $293.25.
It can take up to eight weeks to get your gift cards/checks so now is the time to cash it in.
Happy shopping,

Looky, Looky!

My brother and his fiancee bought Den and I this magnet. I just love it and it works perfect with our little problem. Hey, have I ever said that we have money problems? LOL. Well, not the lose your house kind of problems but still.
Part of the problem is all the money we are spending on gas. Having to go get Anna quite a bit is tacking on anywhere from $100 to $200 a month. The bus only runs on certain weekends and the train takes her downtown Chicago and she won't get in until midnight. Walking around Union station on a Friday at midnight isn't my idea of fun! So we are way overspending in that category. My hope is that she will either get used to being down there or find someone to get a ride with. She did meet one girl from Gurnee so there is hope for the gas category yet.
Another problem is the "food fund" we were going way over there. So Den and I talked and he came up with a plan. That was the first time he ever took charge of a bill problem(hate to say but he usually was the bill problem). We have to write down ever thing we spend with no exceptions. I think the problem was both of us in this category, I would run a deal or two and he would pick up a few extra ingredients to "make" the meal.
I really hope this helps us. This is the hardest budget I have ever had. It's almost exactly like the old one and yet, I can't seem to make it work. It's got to work by January or we are sunk. I've got to get everything paid for on Den's check because I stop cleaning in December. At least, I figured this out before January and have a few months to get it to work. Fingers crossed.

I Have an Idea

Most people have an epiphany and it is a huge bang when I have one it's more like a slow fart.  And without further ado, here is my poot!
Everyone has heard of and while I have often wondered if Den and I signed up would we be matched. Wouldn't it be great if they used a program like this to match kids in the dorm? Why not use technology that we already have to make finding a roommate easier? Why not use it when you are looking to find a roommate in the "real" world? Hmmmm, maybe I should start a business? Do you think that would give me their program?
Just a thought,

Poor Thing!

I just got an email from A.Marie that her blog has been hacked. So she wanted me to let everyone know that she will be down for a few days. And that she loves us all. Well ok, she didn't say that she loved us all but I added that cuz I'm sure she does. She is just that nice!
Thanks for stopping over and pray for her blog(LOL),

I'm Not Going To Brag........

I'm a Northern girl. I've lived in Illinois my entire life. My dad was from Alabama, Mobile to be exact. I've been told that that is as southern as you can git. My mother in law, Donna, is from the south too. She mostly grew up in Lebanon, Tennessee. Have I ever mentioned that it was her family that started Cracker Barrel? How cool is that?
Anywho, even though I'm a northern girl, my mother in law says all the time that southern is just in the blood. And I can make iced tea(which believe it or not most people up here can't make it) or as some down south call it sweet tea. And I can make corn bread and sausage gravy with the best of them. I don't know why I'm able to do this but I'm quite pleased that I'm able to please a southern palette. My only down fall is that I can't make biscuits. I've tried and tried.
Donna went to TN to visit some family. They had a long conversation about biscuits. She also, brought me back some flour. I'm pretty sure this is a hint. I found a recipe on the bag but it didn't seem like much of a recipe. So does anyone out there have a killer biscuit recipe? And it needs to be somewhat easy.
Thanks for helping a northern girl,

Shouldn't Have Said Anything

This is the inside of the 1999 Lumina. So far, this is my favorite car. It keeps going and going with minimal upkeep. This is the car that Den painted and I'm not even going to mention that it is rusting again and needs to be painted again.
This car started out as mine, then went to Anna, came back to me when the Focus died and Den took my car, and will go to DJ if it lives that long. And what does all of this have to do with the picture? The interior is gray. I know the floor board looks kind of dingy but trust me it's clean just old.
One night when Anna still lived here, she was driving herself and DJ to their grandmother's house.(Sounds like this story should have a wolf) If you have ever driven just north of Chicago, you know what hell is. It was also, a Friday night and there was a ton of construction. Throw in a little brother and Anna had a huge mess! DJ decided he was bored and started yanking the cup holder in and out. She later said that she wanted to smack him but the traffic was too fierce to take her hand off of the wheel. So here is what I was told the conversation went like(my guess is Anna cussed at him too but left that out)-
Cup holder being yank back and forth as fast as humanly possible
Anna-Knock it OFF!
DJ-Haha, you can't stop me
DJ-No you aren't, you have to drive.(Can't you just hear the smug little brother tone?)
The cup holder is still being pulled back and forth with increasing speed
DJ-You can't stop me!
So we didn't have a cup holder for a while. And every time I had to drive around with a coffee mug in my lap and it spilled, I wanted to kick the boy. I went to my in laws one time and it looked like I had pissed myself cuz I had to slam on the breaks and I dumped water all over myself.
Since poor Den has spent so much time trying to get parts for the cars, he found another cup holder at the junk yard and replaced. And this little fix only cost $2.73! After I thanked him, he apologized for the color seeing as that was the only one he could get.  Have I mentioned that I'm color blind? I would never known!

A New Purpose

So little Anna is doing better at college. I'm so grateful. She and her roommate are on shaky but better ground. Anna has gotten her to pick up a bit so that was helping with the stress level. But my guess is her roommate won't be there for the second semester. If you go to college, you have to go to class, who knew?
The first week she was gone, I tore her room apart and scrubbed it. I also went through it and took down some stuff. She saved a lot of little things that really didn't need to be out. So I packed it up. I figured she would be upset. She just laughed and said that she knew I was itching to get a hold of her room. She did like it and said it was more mature. Good that was what I was aiming for.

But being me, it just seems like such a waste to have the room doing nothing. It should be earning its keep. Den said that we should rent it out. But we tried that before and the woman never paid and yelled at me all the time. It was horrible. Or she would invite her entire family over for dinner and tell us about it a few hours before hand and then want Den to cook and I had to clean up afterward. Her family was great, she wasn't!
Anyways, back to the story at hand.............................................

I'm starting to think that Anna's room looks like a laundry room! I can get a few of these and dry clothes in there. I was going to put up a clothes line but that might be too much.
I'll let you know.

Free Stuff & Panic

Not much is going on here. With Anna being away, it is so quiet. She was the one making all of the noise. DJ is off in his own little world of school work and video games so the quiet is welcomed and new.
I've been getting back into the swing of looking for deals and free stuff. I just wanted to remind everyone that Walmart is one of the best places to get freebies. They always ship and never sell you email address. Here is a link directly to the free stuff!
On a sad note, as you know we had to back off paying as much extra on the mortgage. I ran the numbers and all I can say is YUCK!!!! It's a 30 year mortgage and if we kept paying every other week of $658, we would have the house paid for in 2025. But because we dropped the payment down to $600 biweekly, we will have it paid for in 2030. Five years is a very long time. We are still shaving 9 years off of the 30 year mortgage but I'm still sad.
I need a drink! Is there anywhere that I can get a free one?

Santa's Secret!

I'm on a roll! Wouldn't it be nice to get all of my Christmas shopping done by November? This is for another person on my list. He just put in a bar so this should be appreciated. It was $16.29 so my new total for the year is $293.25.
We have so many people to buy for that it seems overwhelming at times. But in a roundabout way it is helping Den and I. As you know, we never have any money to do anything so we can go out and search for a deal. We get to do something and have some time together. It's helping us get back on track. It's been so stressful with Anna leaving and all the bills that Den and I weren't doing so well. Being able to get out of the house and talk has been wonderful. It's not the greatest date night ever but it is helping our marriage improve. Working towards a common goal helps. Who knew Christmas shopping would save us?

I would love to send the Focus off with a bang, literally! Shooting it would be a gift but alas, I'm pretty sure that if I opened fire on the car, someone would call the cops. But then again, I have some amazing neighbors, well it's a thought anyways.
Den said that the F***us would be his project car. Well after finding out that getting the parts that he needed was a huge pain , he is rethinking it. Apparently, a lot of these cars have had the entire fuel system stripped off of them at ALL the junk yards around here. Hmmmmm, there is probably a lesson in that alone!
It just seems that there is no end in site with the car now. He has replaced about 10 different parts and nothing is helping. We have about $500 left in the car fund for the year and I think we need to save that for the cars that are working.
So here is our dilemma and since you all are so much smarter than me, I will pose this question. Would we be better off donating it on our taxes or selling it? I don't think that if we sold it for parts, we would get more than $250 for it. It runs, sort of. It's a very scary thing when it is trying to go. The gauges are all over the place and it makes some god awful noise. I backed away slowly when Den was forcing it to run.
If we donated, we would go through Kars for Kids. I have no idea how this works. I read through it but with my FIL being on vacation, I figured I would ask you. We would get a $500 tax deduction. I know that it all depends on our tax bracket and all. I was just wondering if you had ever done this and what was your take on it.
If all else fails, I'm going to do this with it.
Thanks for the help,

I Have a ..........

Something is wrong with me! I went to type I think I have a peeker and typed in pecker. Ahhhhh, what to do with me?
Anyways before I got myself all worked up and in trouble, I think someone has been looking at my Santa Stash on the blog. So I'm going to change it up a bit. I'm just going to list my grand total for the year and what I bought. No more what for who!
I bought 3 of these shirts in a bag from Kohls. They were $24 marked down to $3.36 each! So my grand total for the year is $276.96! I better get moving if I want to finish by December!
I also have $500 coming to me from Bank of America rewards. Right or wrong, I charged Anna's first EIU bill for the points. (It's paid off.) And I have $75 worth of gift cards I need to cash in from My Points. Not too bad!
I better get shopping!

I May Be Homeless

So yeah, I did something a little bad in the heat of the moment. Our satellite bill went from $25 to $40 a month and none of the lower channels were working anymore. You can pretty much guess how it went from there. I called and asked nicely to put it back to $25 and fix it. Hmmmm, transferred to another department and was told that I would have to pay to have someone come out to look at it but I could shut it off without a charge. And also that I was never entitled to the local channels that stopped working. I told the Dish Network employee that he was making it worse but was really selling shutting it off. So he shut it off then and there. I then asked about the $40 charge for the next month and he told me that they never charged me. Ummmm but I'm looking at my credit card statement online and yes, I was charged. That's what prompted me to call. No you weren't charged, he replies.
I was so frustrated by the time I got off the phone that I was glad that I canceled it. That was until I had to tell Den what I had done. I tried to tell him about all the money that we would be saving. Honestly, that didn't fly. He wasn't interested in streaming Hulu or Netflix either. He looked at me like I was a bit nuts when I told him the story. He would rather that I mutilated his arm than get rid of TV. I'll fix this I promised as he walked away mumbling. Did I mention that all three cars went down this weekend? The black car is still in the same sorry state as before and the brakes were almost gone in both the Kia and the Lumina. At one point, we only had one barely working car. So he worked all weekend and had no TV to watch. I'm lucky he didn't kill me!
Any ideas about the satellite,

More Budgeting!

I'm so boring! I know it with all of my heart. I've had to rework our budget because of all of the changes going on here. With Anna leaving and some added expenses, we have dropped down the amount that we are paying on the house. It was nice to pay over three extra payment a year but we just can't keep it up. I had hoped that the money that we were spending on gas would go down but thanks to the lovely Focus things have changed again. SO if you want to see the old budget go here. Otherwise, this is the new budget!

1200 .00 House payment(bi-weekly) so we save $300 a week
160.00 Car Insurance
160.00 Nicor and Comed
280.00 gas for all three cars
25.00 satelite
320.00 groceries

60.00 Den "fake" smokes
70.00 garbage and water
32.00 pills for me
30.00 gym for Den
160.00 cell
200.00 to save
80.00 for Anna's expenses
2777.00 total

This is the break down of how we will use the checks every week.
Week 1 -$300 house, $242 food,gas, pills,& cig ,saving and Anna, $70 garbage & water, $25 sate,$30 gym
Week 2- $300 house, $242 food, gas,pills &cig
,saving and Anna,, $160 car insurance
Week 3- $300 house, $242 food, gas,pills & cig
,saving and Anna,, $160 Nicor and ComEd,
Week 4- $300 house, $242 food, gas,pills & cig
,saving and Anna,, $160 cell

So somethings have gone up and some have gone down. I think that I'm going to have to tweak it again but at least, the budget is a little more stable than before. And I do know that it is a ton of money for the cell phones. We need the plan with unlimited texting or my teenagers go over.
I'm also going to stop cleaning for my inlaws at the end of the year so I'm trying to adjust the budget accordingly. Also, we will probably be changing car insurance companies. We are actually paying $240 a month and its going up to $270. Anna is covering the difference. But now that she is gone, they won't give us a discount for an absentee driver where other companies will. And it looks like it will be about $100 a month savings if we switch. I'll keep you posted with the boring details of my life!

We Need A New Plan

As you all know, the Focus hates us. I've been complaining for a while and well I'm still at it. Den has been driving the Kia for a few weeks and its not working out so well. The cost for gas is killing us. He is spending about $60 a week. I'm not one to procrastinate about anything. Being an A personality, I pretty ridged in my schedules and thinking but I let this problem slide. With DJ starting high school and Anna moving to EIU, we haven't done a lot with the focus.
So far we have dumped $1300(ish) into that lovely piece of machinery. Like I said before we have had it to transmission shops, reputable and not so reputable mechanics, and the Ford dealer. No one knows what it is. So Den has been pulling it apart bit by bit trying to trace it down. The problem is most of the things that he thinks might be it are all Ford parts. Of course they are and they cost three times as much as NAPA parts. He has been trying to get to the junk yard but they close before he can get there. Like we should expect anything different!
So we are back to dumping more money in it but it should be cheaper in the long run than paying for all this gas or getting a new car. So Den has a project car, I think thought that he was hoping for a Trans Am for a project not a sweet ride like a Focus.

Look What I Found!!!

This is the most important information you are going to get all day! You may want to sit down for this one. Did you know that Aldi sells candy? Gifts from God are everywhere!!! And it is some of the best candy that I have ever had. It was only $.25! I know, a quarter! They are made in Austria and come in dark chocolate too. Amazing!
Aldi also has a new tool. It's a meal planner and it will help you make a grocery list. I thought it was fun just to see what it would come up with.

Part of the Process?

Life is good. Well at least, that is what my dad would always say, I'm not sure if I'm a believer or not.
Poor, poor Miss Anna. Her exact words were, "I'm trapped in Hell." To be honest, that is not what a parent wants to hear. And to be super honest, that is not what a parent wants to hear when they are trying to pay $20,000 a year for college.
Little Banana is not adjusting so well. Just flipping perfect! She loves the campus and her classes. She actually likes school work and is one of those kids that will ask a teacher for help and then just hang out for a while. She wants to become a teacher and this is her way of seeing what the "life" is all about. She had a very hard time in junior high. She was bullied and beaten on. It was a bad time for all of us. But she had a wonderful teacher take her under his wing and help her through it all. Mr. Hinkel is a gift. And she has decided to be a teacher in junior high to help other kids. She was a student teacher this summer and helped with special needs kids. She loved it. I know that things can change and she can switch majors but I doubt it.
Anyways, back to the story. Anna and her roomy aren't on greatest terms. I actually feel sorry for Anna's roommate because she has no one that cares. I've tried to explain this to Anna. And Anna said "you live in this mess and deal with all of the guys." Anna has found out by being at EIU that she is actually very clean compared to everyone. She always thought that she was dirty because of all of my nagging. But compared to college students she is spotless. Oops. And from all that I've seen, she is living in the movie "Animal House." All of which is not going over so well.
One lovely, and long Friday night she called VERY upset because the buses weren't running and she couldn't get home. The word hysterical is a good word to describe the phone call I got. Sooooooooo, I drove 8.5 hours round trip to get her. Yes, right through rush hour traffic in Chicago on a FRIDAY! And then drove her back on Sunday. She better take good care of me in my old age!
The good news is the buses are running and will bring her within an hour of us for $50 round trip. I'm hoping that she will settle in and find her way. She also told me that she has been hanging out with a church group that is very involved with the college. So let me get this straight, you leave for college and don't go wild, you go to church. Hmmmmm, what kind a bad influence were we on the kids. Go to college and find Jesus. We are heathens.
I never would have guessed that she would have missed us. I figured that she would have started partying and failed classes. Not being home sick and going to church.
This is going to get expensive if she comes home every weekend but I would never tell her no. My guess is she will settle in and this will pass. I never would have thought that she would want to be with us. We will just find a way to make it all work. She also said that she can't work for a little bit. Panic. She is miserable and can't. We had an adult conversation(who knew) and she said that she is on overload. She has enough cash to get her through the first semester so I will let it go. She said she wants to resolve her roommate issues, find her classes and just get used to it. It makes sense but I still have the job of worry about the money. Den and I talked and in the end decided that she has to put school work first. Next semester, I'll just come unhinged. She even thinks that she can get a full time job for the summer through a friend and is going to look into that also. College is nothing more than worrying for the parents!
So if you leave me a comment and I don't answer, its cuz I'm driving,

Send Earnings

There should be a law against plagiarizing yourself. This is a total rip off of this post! Do I get jail time or a time out?
Anywho, I just found out that Send Earnings has the same new feature as Inbox Dollars. Its called cash tasks. You can pick up a few extra bucks or should I say quarters for clicking on or checking links. I have been doing it for a few weeks and it really helps push you to the $30 payout faster.
Just a thought and thanks for coming to see me,

Is Anna Like her Mother?

If she saw that title, we would have a full on fight. She is doing well at EIU and getting into the swing of it all. I don't think that she has missed us at all. And to be honest, she wasn't here much. But when she did show up, it was a whirlwind of activity and friends. We were a pit stop for her.;)
I know she is gone but it hasn't sunk in completely. I keep thinking things like when will she be home so I can make dinner. And then it dawns on me and stings a bit.
Anyways, back to the question! She seems to be budgeting her money. At least, that is what she tells me. She hasn't charged anything on the credit card and has been making the most of her cash. She has even been searching out deals! Maybe I was a good influence on her! That is so hard to believe.
I just hope that a life time of frugal wore off on her. I keep thinking about the old credit card commercial where the parents show up at their kids dorm room and the kid is partying and wearing scuba gear. All charged on their credit card! I'm pretty sure that I would be arrested but it would make for an interesting blog story!
Thanks for stopping by and I'll let you know if she goes on a spending spree,

Don't Forget!

While you are out getting all of the lovely school supplies and the children are pouting and the parents are all smiles, don't for get to get one of these...........
To you it is a mere pencil box, to me it is a gift from the gods. I keep all of my coupons in here. Just an idea if your couponing method isn't working. I think couponing is an art form that takes a life time to perfect. I have too much time on my hands!

Free Money!!

Since Anna is away at school and I'm planning on cutting every corner I can and then some, I have been looking for a way to make a few extra pennies. And some might say that it is a waste of time to do something for such a small amount of money, I say POO!
Inbox Dollars now has a new way to make money. It's called cash tasks. And while you won't be able to retire on the money you make, it would be quite easy to make a few extra bucks a day. So go check that out and if there is anyone out there that hasn't signed up for Inbox Dollars please use my link.

The Actual Numbers!

I'm not sure if anyone is really interested in these figures but I'm going to post them on the off chance that someone will use them as a guide and to help keep me organized.
So here is the break down for one semester at EIU.

Activity Fee 102.03
Athletics Fee 103.65
Biology Course Fee 25.00
Campus Improvement Fee 232.00
Computer Network Fee 48.00
Grant-In-Aid/SEDS Fee 144.72
Health Service Fee 90.90
Legal Service Fee 5.22
New Student Program Fee 100.00
Room/Board - Fall 4127.00
Student Insurance Fee 109.95
Textbook Rental Fee 159.20
Tuition, UG, resident 4064.00
Union Bond Revenue Fee 212.03
Total $9523.70

That is a disgusting number!!! And here is how we are going to be breaking it down.
-$250 for the fall enrollment fee
-$150 for the housing down payment
-$1742 for the Fed Direct Subsidized Loan
-$ 800 for the Federal Pell Grant
-$1425 for the IL MAP Grant
total $5156.00 We are lucky that my inlaws will cover this in the beginning, soooo lucky. And the good thing is she will end up getting more money as she goes along. Here is the break down once we start paying for it.
Including the housing and the enrollment fee the total for the year is
-$3500 Anna works
-$5200 child support
-$2000 tax credit(still hoping for more)

God, I hope those numbers are close. But I think that it is still a good idea to post these because I can come back later and see if they match up. There are still quite a few variables in there that I have not added in. Like getting her home, how much she will really make at her job, and spending money. The good thing is her cousin had that job when she was at EIU and that is what she made. We are so lucky that she was able to get the job! And we are still up in the air on the tax credit. All I can do is keep crunching numbers and complaining.
Thanks for once again letting me vent/worry/complain on your shoulder,
PS-I don't usually add an update but I had to leave Donna Freedman's comment front and center. I laughed until it hurt. And I love the way she is always trying to help someone pay their bills!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous Donna Freedman said...
Maybe her roommate will pay her to go away for a few hours, if you know what I mean... ;-) She could pay all her fees that way and still have enough to treat her roomie to a soda on their way to the STD clinic!
