Cheap Black and White Room Redo

I'm still plugging away at fixing up Anna's room. The above picture was taken at a posh furniture store. I go in those places just to make myself feel poor. It works every time. But I take some pictures and get some wonderful ideas in exchange for the lower self-esteem.
I found this gem at the Goodwill for $9.99. It was a bit of a mess with gorilla glue stuck to it because there wasn't a hook on the back. No worries because my MIL fixed it. I know, I feel bad about taking advantage of her. She is also taking in a few of my shirts. I wish it was because I lost weight(I am still trying though), I got them at the Goodwill too and they didn't fit right. Not to fear though, my inlaws are talking about moving and I will repay them for their kindnesses by moving and packing them.
My MIL, Donna, found this poster and donated it to the cause. But I'm not sure if I will frame and hang it or not. I guess it will depend on me finding a cheap frame.
This is a Chuck E Cheese picture from back in the day. What I wouldn't do for a hug from them when they were little.
The only thing that I did purchase new was the three prints from Hobby Lobby for these garage sale/Goodwill frames.
This was another frame that I got from the Goodwill. It had a salvage sticker on it and for the life of me I couldn't find the flaw. It was brand new and still had the cardboard triangles on all of the corners. It was $9.99.
It ended up being the corner was chipped. A little permanent black marker and we were back in business.
DJ was about 4 in this picture and Anna was 8. I know these are a bit hard to make out because I took a picture of a picture that has been scanned and turned into a black and white. But trust me, they are adorable.
This one is my favorite. It's Scott and Anna kissing Donna on the cheeks.
We have spent about $85 on this redo not including the poster Donna bought or the ink she used to copy the pictures. I'm pretty happy with the costs so far but the minute I buy the mattress and furniture, it won't be such a cheap room redo. Oh well, sometimes you just have to spend a few bucks. And with the holidays quickly approaching and Anna coming home and nothing for her to sleep on, I see money leaving soon. This would have been a really cheap redo if I still had furniture in there. Oh and I will need a comforter. Sigh, there goes more money.
What was your cheapest room redo?

A ? and a Cute

So the question is has anyone out there tried the Dollar Shave Club?
I'm still working on the 10% challenge. See I really do try to accomplish the goals that I set up for myself. I am doing alright shaving money off but I think I'm screwed when I really have to turn the heat up.
I buy all of our razors from CVS with coupons and I try to get them at the lowest price possible. But I think this is cheaper. Well the el cheapo blade would cost less than what I'm spending at CVS but it doesn't look like it would be that great of a shave. I don't know and that's why I'm asking. Anyone, anyone?

My awesome Aunt sent Den this card for his birthday. She rocks and she is funny. I guess I get it from her.
I laugh every time I think about this card!
Looking for the cute answer,

Traveled Mosh Monday

DJ's dorm
We took a very quick trip to see the kids. It was short in visit time and long in drive time. Oh well, we hadn't seen DJ in two months and it was getting to me.
College life suits him. He is doing well. Oh and that is a waterfall behind him. Trust me, we are paying good money for him to be able to walk to class on the bridge above it.
Speaking of good money, this is a picture of the miniature room that we stayed in near the campus. When I called to book the rooms, the guy said they had a room that was smaller than the normal room and half the price. I had no idea that it was behind the elevator and the word smaller that he used, was too big of a word to describe it. We renamed the room, the punishment room.
The bathroom was also tiny. You know when you go to a hotel, you try not to touch anything in the shower, well I got over that fear quickly. It was a stand up shower and big enough for half a person. I had to shave my legs while holding the razor, the soap and the miniature bottles of shampoo and conditioner.  Needless to say, I had to prop my leg up on the wall to shave. My legs haven't been that high since the 90's.
Anna and Scott wanted to visit DJ so it meant another hotel room that we had to pay for we had to wait a while for them to get to Muncie. While waiting for them we decided to kill time at the Rural King. I had never heard of the store before. Y'all it was like redneck heaven. Yes, they sold camouflage booby holders and ..........................
camo knickers!!!!! Why am I wasting money at Victoria Secrets?
This was pretty much the entire toy department, John Deere toys. They don't believe in a lot of variety.

But to be fair to your daughter, they had camo chairs.
I know I sound all snobby and everything but I had no idea that you could buy things like this. It was a whole new world.
So what did the Mott snobs buy at Rural King? Beef sticks and bullets. It was the best purchase of my life AND we didn't need the FOID card. Anyone could buy bullets!!!!!!

On Saturday, we walked around Ball State campus. It rained but we did the best we could. The kids posed in front of Beneficence. The campus has so many stunning points of interest.
It was a nice visit with DJ. And it was too short. He's doing well so that made me feel better about driving away. It didn't stop Anna from crying.
Our next stop was EIU. It's about a 3 hour drive from Ball State to EIU. It was an even shorter visit with Anna. We drank a bit that night and I brought Portillos(Its some of the best Italian beef ever) from home so it was an easy dinner.
And then Sunday morning we headed back home. I don't think that we will try to visit both college in one weekend again. We will visit each college separate. It was just too much.
And on to the fun stuff!
I got $6 from Pinecone Research and $51.80 from BP. So we are at...............................
$250          Bank of America credit
$100.49     Google(blog writing)

Fakin' Food

I'm a terrible cook and I'm pretty sure that I have said this over and over. I just don't have the homemaker's touch. Or do I?
I really have been trying to cut 10% off my ass and bills. Hey, I try. I normally don't succeed but there is always an effort.
Anywho, I made up this recipe trying to eat a bit healthier. And it turned out! Who knew?
Den has on a few rude occasions said and I quote his manner lacking self, "I thought I was going to shit out my lower intestines after that meal you made." He's funny but still lacking tack. Honestly, I don't take offense to comments like these. It can be that bad when I cook.
First, you are going to have to grate about 3 cups of cauliflower. This is no fun task. Hey, I'm still overly honest and I'm still over-sharing with ya.
Some of it will look like rice, some of it like crumbled cheese and some like broken off parts of cauliflower. It's all good, I tell you.

Just to let you know since I made this up, consider the recipe more of a guideline than an exact. It turned out amazing but its still me and I screw things up. LOL
 Fakin' Fried Rice
3 cups of shredded cauliflower
2 Tablespoons of vegetable oil
1/2 teaspoon bacon grease(this is optional but it adds flavor)
1 small chopped onion
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1/2 of a bag of frozen peas and carrots
1/4 of a bag of broccoli
2 eggs
1/4 to 1/2 cup of soy sauce
Heat the veg oil and the bacon grease add the onion and garlic, saute until the onion is soft.
Heat the peas and carrots and broccoli in the microwave until warm(it doesn't cook well if the veggies are cold) add them with the shredded cauliflower to pan. Stir well.
Push everything off to the side in the pan.
Add your eggs to open side of your pan and scramble until completely cooked.
Mix thoroughly and add soy sauce.
I put the leftovers in an old Chinese food container. I do things to amuse me.
This turned out so well that Den ate two plates of it. That never happens! And there were no intestine jokes afterward.
This would also be a great recipe to add leftovers to. Maybe some chicken or some ham would be great. I'm on a roll, people!
On fire,
Sonya Ann

All Things Gain

I'm obsessed a bit with Gain. I love the stuff but its crazy money compared to cheapy laundry detergent and dryer sheets.
Anywho, I have another tip for you when you travel. Pack a few dryer sheets with your clothes. It keeps everything smelling AWESOME and clean. I may stuff a few dryer sheets in our pockets and quit doing laundry. It could happen.
When we were in Vegas, I only used a small free carry-on for my clothes. I didn't have to reuse any shirts but I had to wear my pants twice. I hung them on the rack behind the door and put a dryer sheet in the pockets. I also rubbed the pants with the sheet. This worked perfect.
Not washing,

Cute, Expensive, and Frosty Mashed up Monday

Sue has his moments.
The only time that cat is cute, is right before he trashes something. He looks at me and then knocks over some picture frames or bites them and then happily runs off when I start yelling at him. He should be named Mistake.
This sign was in front of a local garage sale. I know that that phrase has been around for a while but it was still funny.
The garage sale season is pretty much over in this area. We didn't find anything spectacular this year but I have managed to pick up a few cheap frames for Anna's room makeover.
When Anna first moved into an apartment, she bought a white chair just like this one from the Goodwill. I think we paid $20+ for it. This one was $699! I told Anna she is keeping her chair forever! The porn chair will be in the family for a long time. I think if I ever found another one I would buy it for Anna's room at home. It would be a funny joke but not for $699.
While poking around for furniture for Anna's room at another posh store, I spied these pictures. Dude, they wanted $159 for each one!!!!!!!! It looked like scrapbook paper to me. Now I know that I can get a frame for $1 from the Goodwill or a garage sale and scrapbook paper is $.29. How do people have that kind of money to piss away?
I found this little gem for $25 at a craft store. Again, a Goodwill frame, $1 worth of burlap and some letter stickers for a cost of maybe $3.
Anna's decorating style is more modern than mine. Her room won't match the rest of the house but I'm fine with that.
I found this picture for $79.99. It is what I was looking for but again, I'm cheap. I found a picture of a flower at the Goodwill for $9.99. The only problem was the stem of the flower was green. My wonderful MIL, Donna, took it and is going to clean it up and color the stem. She is a wonderful artist and loves to help. I have been blessed. She also loves to get caught up in my hair brained schemes. I wanted black and white photos for the walls but my scanner stopped working. Hey, the printer is fine and I'm not replacing it. So Donna offered to scan a bunch of pictures and put them in the frames that I collected. She seemed happy about doing my chores. She is a gift.
I finally grew Morning Glories. It's the end of the season though. Son of a XXXXX! I have planted Morning glory seeds for years and NOTHING. I have soaked the seeds, scored the seeds, yelled at the seeds, and begged them to grow. Again NOTHING.
Den even made me a trellis for my Morning glories. I have tried so many times and failed so many times.I try to admire the trellis by itself.

So where did they grow? In the corner, by the grill, where no one can see them. Not even close to the trellis. Why, man, why? I won't be upset when the frost bites their ass.
Thank you sluggy for thinking of me when you saw this!
I received $3 from Pinecone research and I got a $250 credit on my Bank of America card. Go Sonya!
And here is how my free money stash is shaping up for the 2014 Christmas season.........

10% Challenge

That yummy picture sums up my problem! It is a piece of chocolate mousse cake and of a piece of tiramisu from the buffet at South Point. Honestly, those are the best desserts that I have ever had in my life. They have also helped lead to my latest crisis. I'm fat and broke. Well, I'm not that fat or that broke but there is SO much room for improvement. I try and give myself a pep talk and remind myself of the things that I have accomplished. That helps but there is still so much more for me to do. Another hurdle that I need to get over. Why can't I just wake up and have everything done? So here is the challenge that I am setting up for myself, I'm going to try and lose some weight and I'm going to try and save some money off of my bills. I would like to lose 50 pounds but I would settle for anything at this point. I would also like to shave some money off of the monthly bills. To be honest, I think shaving 10% off the bills will be easier than 10% off my ass. Will I succeeded? Probably not. Hey, I'm honest with you.
In order to come close to 10% off of the bills, I will need to shave off $250ish. That won't be easy. Here's is the tally from the last time that I posted about it. And I'll just let you know if I lose any weight, I'm not posting what 10% of my weight is. Fat shaming won't work with me!
So who is with me? Wanna lose weight and gain money? Seriously, I need a fat wallet and skinny waist-not the other way around. Just post about it and I'll link to it.
10% committed,
Sonya Ann

Homemade Gain

I figured out how to make my favorite laundry detergent for super cheap, FINALLY!
I still make my own laundry detergent, its kind of like the hand soap that I made. I use bars of soap and anything else(borax and washing soda) that I have to throw in the pot with hot water, and then blend it until its gloopy. I add 3 tablespoons of my gloop to an empty laundry detergent bottle and then top it off with hot water. I was putting the 3 tablespoons in the washing machine in the beginning but sometimes it would leave a residue on the clothes. Predissolving my gloop ended any problems that I was having.
My homemade detergent didn't smell like anything though. Mind you, it got everything super clean but didn't have a fresh smell. Then I had an AH-HA moment(not the band but the brain), why not stuff a dryer sheet into the bottle, add the detergent/gloop and then add hot water. It works like a charm! Just let it sit for a day so the scent can disperse. And I bet this would work great for detergent that you didn't like the smell of. I would empty a bit from the bottle, add a dryer sheet and then hot water. You could even dissolve powdered laundry detergent with a dryer sheet in an old bottle. I may have to experiment with this one.
So there you go, cheap Gain.
Super clean,
Sonya Ann

Smashed and Smokey Monday

It's the end of the road for the fun season here. No more fresh veggies from the garden or from the cracks of the driveway.
Now that the tomato plants are drooping and wilting, they have started producing tomatoes. This is the largest haul of the season. Give it a week and I'll have to pull them.
Well, it once was a pretty and inviting plant. I took it down and stored the pot for the winter. I'm thinking that I need a wreath or something to cover the nails. One more crafty project to add to the list.
Speaking of projects, Anna's room now has a fresh coat of paint. Wow, is it easy to paint a room when there isn't much in there.
I had said before that we weren't going to paint the ceiling or the trim but Den changed my mind. We had a terrible time getting a clean line on the ceiling and the baseboard. Needless to say, it came out perfect where the bed sits. Why do things like that always happen?
And how did I forget to tell you this story? Ok, when we were in Vegas I was sitting by myself at a machine. I was happy and not bothering a soul. A very drunk guy sat down next to me and started talking to me. I was polite but didn't really talk to him. I got the creeper vibe. But he persisted. I nodded occasionally but ignored him. Then his drunk son came over. Soon they both tried to talk to me. I nodded and just acted busy. Normally, I would have gotten up but I was winning. DAMN THEM! Finally, the dad asked if I wanted to"Toke up and party with the both of them in their room." And I moved.
I'm a fun person but I'm pretty sure that I don't come across as the type that wanted to get high and have a threesome with a father-son combo.
But of course, Den had to outdo me.
He just misses so much. He's going to get molested, I swear.
We went to an awesome Mexican restaurant and the waiter was so in love with Den. Never mind the fact that I sitting there. He couldn't stop batting his eyes at Den. I didn't laugh until the waiter offered to get a wonderful sauce for Den's fajita. I told Den, he probably shouldn't eat it.
THEN, I left Den to play a machine and when I came back some woman was leaning on him and asking how to play slot machines. Really?!? I didn't say anything to her but told Den where I was going to play a machine. She shot me a dirty look for talking to him. Idiot. Den told me later that she was nice and just wanted his help in learning how to play but she had a shuttle to catch and was leaving soon. He's so dumb. A few hours later, I saw her playing two machines at once. She obviously didn't have to catch a shuttle and Den must have been a good teacher.
And I think that's all I got for you.
Not participating,
Sonya Ann
